STATEMENT: 6. The pinbox garden series depicts specimens removed from their natural environment and displayed behind plastic. The artistic analysis of each allows little information to escape the notice of the viewer. The past and future worth of each leaf is certified with the recycle symbol, an indirect form of corporate branding. Symbolically the piece references the progressive corruption of the natural.

STATEMENT: The core idea behind this piece is the dilemma of deciphering natural from synthetic. The piece is also an investigation of valuation associated with labels. The history of the box, the control mechanism, is more prominent than the history of the subject itself. The recycle symbols ironically validate the naturalness of the leaf.

STATEMENT: This piece represents the four sides of a terrarium consisting of natural materials collected from a river canyon bottom in Utah. In context these materials define the downstream direction of the water flow when no water is present and thus function as a kind of flood warning device for the hiker. Instead of mapping provenience the compost is given a postnet barcode. In a greater context, they collection and numbering symbolize loss of true wilderness.
